  • Greetings,

Schedules are busy during the school year, but CNS hopes you will consider attending at least one of the informative events that follow. These are great opportunities to get first-hand updates on school related issues from the state and local officials who are on the front lines of school funding and policy matters.

Citizens for Needham Schools hosts Senator Brown: Sunday, November 4, 7:30 p.m., Needham Historical Society

Please join Citizens for Needham Schools at our opening meeting of the 07-08 school year.

We are pleased to host our state senator, Scott Brown, at this meeting. Senator Brown will discuss state funding for schools. Last April's Yes for Needham campaign prompted many questions about state funding for our schools: Why are we receiving less money from the state than we used to? Is relief in sight? Senator Brown will be able to answer those questions and fill us in on school funding discussions at the state level.

Please come, and please bring a friend; let's become part of the conversation.

This meeting will also allow you to learn about ways to become more involved with Citizens for Needham Schools. We can always use new ideas and energy!

School Committee Community Forum: Thursday, November 1, 7 p.m., Broadmeadow Performance Center
Please join Superintendent Gutekanst to learn about the Needham Public Schools' mission, vision, values, and goals and share your thoughts with the School Committee.

You can read the mission, vision, values, and goals document at http://www.needham.k12.ma.us/pdf_downloads/Proposed_District_Goals.pdf"

School Committee Open House: Saturday, November 3, 9 a.m.-11 a.m., Needham High School
Everyone is invited for informal coffee and conversation with the School Committee, as well as tours of the new wing of Needham High School.

    School Committee Updates
    Field Study Proposal

The School Committee approved the Field Study Proposal at its October 2 meeting. The School Committee approved the Field Study Proposal for the layout of DeFazio Park and endorsed the Memorial Field layout at its October 2 meeting. The layout reserves space at DeFazio for a possible new middle school, and the field construction plan minimizes disruptions so that no one sport is inconvenienced. You can view the proposal at http://fcw4.needham.k12.ma.us/SC.Packets/SC%%2020packet%2010-2-07.pdf?FCItemID=S0221EB1A

    Budget Season Begins

At its October 16 meeting, the School Committee approved a set of budget guidelines for the FY09 budget. The guidelines outline the district's priorities. They also propose that the School Committee present its budget request in the way that other town departments present their requests: a base budget, which allows for the same level of service as the previous year, and a program improvement budget, which allows for enhancements to the previous year's services. You can see the guidelines at http://fcw4.needham.k12.ma.us/SC.Packets/SC%%2020packet%2010-16-07.pdf?FCItemID=S022A0ED0

Superintendent Gutekanst presented a preliminary list of capital requests at the School Committee's October 2 meeting. Replacements for technology, copiers, musical instruments and furniture, as well as the purchase of a record archiving system received highest priorities for 2009; a technology infrastructure study at Mitchell and Hillside, SMART Boards, the Pollard parking lot and other repaving, and a van replacement are also on the list. You can see the list at http://fcw4.needham.k12.ma.us/SC.Packets/SC% 20packet%2010-16-07.pdf?FCItemID=S022A0ED0
